Edgar António of Mosque Cardoso was born in the Port in 11 of May of 1913 and formou­se in Civil Engineering in the College of Engineering of the University of the Port in 1937.

Professor University professor of the Upper Institute Technician - University Technique of Lisbon.

Honoris doctor Cause for the Federal University of Rio De Janeiro.

He was Together Engineer in the Autonomous one of the Roads up to 1951.

He is as draftsperson of Bridges that more if notabiliza.

The Professor

The First Years

In 5 of August of 1935 Edgar Cardoso it receives guide to carry through its first period of training in the Port of Leixões, for the study of the assoreamento of the Port under the prompt of the Engº Gervásio Leite, Director Technician of the APDL. The report that gave entered in the College in 23 of October, was appreciated and classified with 16 values for the Prof.s Teotónio Rodrigues and Antão de Almeida Garrett.
The Report discloses an excellent work, much illustrated with drawings by hand exempts of very good quality.

Previous Words

As instructions of our College of Engineering the one that I belong as modest pupil and you My Masters, as Professors highly categorisados, I received with affability in day from 5 August the guide from presentation stops in the Management of the ports of the Douro and Leixões effecting my first period of training. Without the so necessary experience and knowing to the Engineer, I initiated in this day exactly my first work that despite the attention and the good will, always applied for its perfect execution, will have fatally that to be defective.

I ask for therefore to my Exmos. Professors that raises me the committed errors, in the certainty, however, that its existence is not resultant of the assiduity lack, nor of my little curiosity to know, but before the inexperiência and limited knowledge the subject that was given me to study.

Leixões, October of 1935

Edgar Cardoso still carried through at least one another period of training in Bragança in the JAE, already in 1937, year of the formation in Civil Engª. We do not make use of the corresponding report, but he has one another notable académico document: the report of a practical work of disciplines of " Ferroconcrete " that consisted of the full calculation of a swimming pool. One more time an applied pupil shows, with excellent felt of projecto and again very good drawings.

Bridge of Boane on the river Umbeluzi, Moçambique, repaired and strengthened for Edgar Cardoso.

Alem of the two great bridges that projectou, Edgar Cardoso still leaves for the history of the Bridges of the Port plus some interventions. A reformularization of the upper tray Da Ponte Luis I and two projectos not materialize: the widening of the same bridge and a railroad bridge using cimbre Da Ponte of the Arrábida that if destined to substitute the Bridge Pious Maria.

Experimentation

Endowed with an extraordinary device and manual ability, it constructed models of its structures and nelas measured, many times with methods or devices invented for itself, the necessary parameters to the evaluation of the structural behavior.
This age one of its facetas more characteristic. For it the structures were projectavam using the hands, trying, ensaindo diverse forms in model. E disdained of the great rivals, the computers, and of the matrical analysis: " They say that it has for who uses prostitutes there... "

Histories

A time, after a visit to the workmanships Da Ponte of S. João (or she would be Da Ponte of the Figueira) I had the luck and the taste to lunch to its side. To the as much it asked to me:

(Ínvar is a league with coefficient of almost null linear dilatação. The measures become therefore without influence of the temperature variation)

- Therefore with two wires of coefficient of different linear dilatação moored to a small crosspiece. He is thus possible to determine a point in the prolongation of the crosspiece that does not suffer any movement in presence from the variation from temperature.

Shape

The professor Edgar Cardoso, truily brilliant as engineer, over all had a difficult shape that it inimizades grangeou many, between colleagues whose opinions nor always accepted upper-class.
Of course cliente its unquestionable category, he did not like to be beaten. Perhaps therefore one was proud not to participate in competitions, preferring the works " for invitation ".
With frequency if he involved in polémicas where the vehement defense of its point of view exceeded the limits of the reasonable one.
They had counted this to me that discloses a little of its carácter: in a meeting of workmanship during the construction Da Ponte of the Figueira of the Estuary, some young engineer will have suggested any alteration to an indication of " the Professor ". Soon he annoyed himself: " Ó my friend! In Portugal alone it has a person of who accepted suggestions: the Prof. Joaquin Sarmento of the College of Engineering of the Port. "

A historical meeting

For occasion of 2º National Meeting on Pré-Esforçadas Structures, carried through in the Port of 2 the 4 of November of 1988, we obtain to bring, as invited lecturer, the Prof. Fritz Leonhard, perhaps more célebre draftsperson of bridges of the Europe.
The Bridge of S. João was already in advanced phase e, one visits private to the workmanship that I had the privilege to follow, had congregated these two great countenances of engineering
